As Power is transient and ephemeral so also is a position. As much as an individual hold a position today,he is prone to leave such post one day no matter how noble, prestigious, powerful and important it is. The scenario that played out in Kano State today by Dethroning the Former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria and an Emir of Kano in Person of Sanusi Lamido Suleiman shows the picture of this analysis. As noble as the post is,he was removed by the unanimous decision being made by the Kano state house of Assembly as well as the Kano State Executive Council today.
The question that tend to be in the lips of the masses has been was the reason for his removal Justifiable? Either being justifiable or not the Governor has shown what the Power of a Governor is.
One shouldn't forget so quickly that the Grandfather to Present Sanusi Lamido,Emir Muhammadu Sanusi 1 was removed in1963 by Sir Ahmadu Bello who was the Premier of Northern region then. Today history repeat itself when his Grandson was dethrone and being replace with Ado Bayero who is the present Emir of Bichi. Its on note that after Kano State Emirates was partition into four which are Gaya,Rano,Bichi and Karaye which means having the same Status with Sanusi, Bayero was appointed as the Emir of Bichi. However one will want to know what is the rudiment of the Fiasco between the Two Juggernaut.
The Cold war between Governor Ganduje and Emir Sanusi has been long coming.Mr Sanusi came to the position from his former position as the governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank.
He attained fame and notoriety after his open accusations against the hen Goodluck Jonathan administration on the management of the country’s oil revenues. He was fired from the job in a controversial manner, which generated widespread condemnation, including from the then All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Ganduje’s party.
Mr Sanusi came into his new role as a traditional ruler with the same attitude. He generated controversies with his utterances, often criticisms directed at government’s policies and actions. At least on two occasions, Mr Sanusi passed a harsh verdict on Mr Buhari’s economic policies as it relates to foreign exchange, alleging at one point that the government was breeding corruption. When Mr Ganduje travelled to China in 2017 to ink a $1.8 billion light rail agreement with China EXIM Bank, the emir used the rostrum at the Kaduna investment summit to tongue-lash the decision.
“At the end of the day, what do you benefit from it? Your citizen will ride on a train and when you ride on a train, in northern Nigeria, in a state like Kano or Katsina, where are you going to? You are not going to an industrial estate to work. You are not going to school? You are not going to the farm. You borrow money from China to invest in trains so that your citizens can ride on them and go for weddings and naming ceremonies,” he said at the time.Insiders say Mr Ganduje took those criticisms with no excuses.
He saw the criticisms first against Mr Buhari, on whose political goodwill he wanted to run again for office, and against himself as an affront. He decided to deal with the critic within.
When the Kano Public Complaints Anticorruption Commission went after the emirate council’s finances, it was clear to all that the governor had risen to axe Mr Sanusi. While the probe was on, the government ordered its halt citing intervention by prominent Nigerians and reconciliation between the governor and the emir.
The 2019 politics:While the dust from the 2017 removal threats was yet to fully settle, politicking for the 2019 elections began in earnest.Through rumours and leaked conversations, it was widely believed that Mr Sanusi had no space in his heart for Mr Ganduje and President Buhari. Those who peddled the perceived stance of the emir back it up with his past utterances.
Not one to keep his traducers guessing, the emir changed the pattern of his criticism by passing veiled comments and innuendos. In the build-up to the polls, Mr Sanusi addressed a sermon that was widely reported in which he was only short of calling out Messrs Buhari and Ganduje.
In what many interpreted as an indirect de-campaigning of Mr Buhari, the emir chargedelectorates to go after competent candidates, arguing that those who have only integrity as their selling point should not be trusted with public office.
In the same sermon, the emir lampooned politicians he described as selfish who promoted brigandage to achieve their political goal, charging people to reject such individuals. Government’s fixers in Kano did not take the comments lightly.
Perhaps sensing what was cooking, the emir, in an address at the Mambayya House in Kano after the elections, said persons in positions like him should not turn heads at wrongs because of fear of losing their posts.“You will do wrong and emir would keep quiet because he is scared that he could be removed. This is what kills the land. Positions are never permanent. Every emir should know this. If emirship is for life I wouldn’t have become the emir, there was someone before me.”Divided House".The events of the during the Partio have sown the seed of divisions among the state’s traditional ruling elite. The state government may have initiated the project to cut down the emir’s powers and influence but it is obvious that it has supporters from the system, beyond the immediate beneficiaries who have accepted the newly created positions of first class emirs.
However, of more concern to many Kano indigenes is the possible discord that segregation may cause from what was a hitherto homogenous community. Political and development issues may sooner or later take the colours of the five emirates if they successfully stand.
However, one can aptly assert that the Removal of Sanusi Lamido Suleiman as the Emir of Kano is Politically Motivated. Behind Political Sentiment,Governor Ibrahim Umar Ganduje should understand that Lamido is one of the Voice the Eastern and Western Elites still regard as a Statesman from the Northern part of Nigeria. He is a Social Crusader. For years,he has been agitating for a Better North by Clamoring for Massive Literacy and Education for the Northerners.
Also,The Popular Almajiri structure has been clearly been criticize by him to the Optimum Level. One may wonder if the breach of Kano State Emirate law,Part 3,Section 13(1a-e) is enough for Lamido be a impeach.
In addition to this, one should ask If the man that is agitating for Girlchild Education in Public Space really deserve to be remove by the Kano State Government as a Result of Politics of Calumny and Sycophancyor probably rivalry that may exist between the duo.One seek to wonder why and how a Man that Publicly fight against Almajiris and Raise a Clarion call of Consciousness in the mind of the Northern Elite was Removed.
It will be apposite to say that to us in Southwest, Sanusi Lamido is a Blessing to the Entire Northern part of Nigeria.Politics aside,Ganduje shouldn't have gotten to this extent of washing one of their Pride Linen Outside. A social Crusader like Sanusi will rise again beyond Ganduje expectations. Just like I rightly opined in the beginning of the writeup that Power is Ephemeral,Ganduje should think critically on this also.He should understand that 36 months to this time,he will be nowhere near the Government house again.
While we won't be crying more than the Bereaved, I still tend to expressly assert that a Social Crusader who espouse how some individuals benefit from Underdevelopment and under education in the Northern part of the Country can be facing this type of assault.Human being can't be perfect which is applicable to Ganduje also but he is more better than dollars-pocket stuffing like Ganduje.
Furthermore,,as good as this fight for Lamido could have been the Masses still remain the bane to achieve it. When we see we won't talk, when we talk we don't act and when we decided to act our efforts will be sabotage by our Brethren. The masses has been Incapacitated by hypocrisy,Lies,Calumny and Deciet. What can we say about people that hail a Corrupt individual and turn their back at a Social Crusader?.
To sum it up,Lamido should be prepared for another task ahead of him.If Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammad receive castigations from where they are being given birth to,who are we to question God for the Bizarre that happens to you? The fact remain that the World need you more than how your People need you. You aren't for anybody, brains like you are for everybody.
